Are You Able to Solve This? That Forgotten Dutch Invention That Forged our Contemporary Globe

One can find many candidates to claim the title of “world’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to a mechanised sawmill invented through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.

“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately 10 sawyers working for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be manufactured in less than a week.”

Owing to their speedy automated saw, which turned logs into planks using virtually no human effort, Dutch builders were able to build vessels faster than anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and artistic supremacy in the continent and the world.

The First Genuine Industrial Device

The inventor's lumber mill, contends the writer, represented “humanity’s first authentic factory machine.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. One component transformed the rotary motion into vertical action for the saw. Another component transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral motion feeding the timber to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment each stroke.

“Each element was modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts in order that they acted in a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every downward motion while advancing with each upward stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of basic components.”
