Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.

“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”

League Context for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

The incident comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that examined his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its recent championship drought.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its ongoing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their status or wealth.
